The dogs of Costa Rica

Photos by Kristi Luther

Costa Rica– While many of us in the United States keep our dogs on leashes, this was a rarity to see during our trip. Puppies with clean coats and heart-melting eyes walked right up to us frequently, and we were left wondering if they were strays or dogs on their way back home. The warm climate grants these cuties the freedom to roam around – definitely more than the Missouri pups currently in subzero temperatures. Here are some of the cute faces we saw.

  1. It’s funny you feature these dogs. I recall Ben Zack commenting to me about them in 2011. Particularly in Monteverde, we observed how alike all the mutts look similar. Lots of extra-long legs and the same head shape, if I recall. Give it a few hundred years and there’ll be a AKC-certified Monteverde Terrier or something.
